The Jal Mandir (Water Temple) in Pawapuri is a highly revered Jain temple located in the Nalanda district of Bihar. Built out of pure white marble, the temple stands majestically in the center of a massive square tank or pond filled with blooming pink lotuses. Pawapuri is the sacred place where Lord Mahavira, the 24th and last Tirthankara of Jainism, attained Nirvana (liberation) in 527 BCE. According to legend, the demand for his holy ashes was so immense that people scooped up vast amounts of soil from the cremation spot, creating the deep pond that now surrounds the temple. A long stone bridge connects the bank to this beautiful floating sanctuary.
