Nalanda was a renowned mahavihara (large Buddhist monastery) and ancient seat of learning in Bihar. Founded in the 5th century CE under the Gupta Empire, it attracted scholars, pilgrims, and students from all over China, Korea, Tibet, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia. It was the world's first fully residential international university! Its colossal library, called 'Dharmaganja' (Treasury of Truth), contained hundreds of thousands of sacred manuscripts and was housed in three large multi-storey buildings. Legendary Chinese scholar Xuanzang studied and taught here for several years, leaving behind rich descriptions of Nalanda's high academic standards, grand brick structures, and stone pillars.
