The Mahabodhi Temple is a highly sacred Buddhist temple in Bodh Gaya, marking the location where Prince Siddhartha attained supreme enlightenment (Nirvana) under the Bodhi Tree to become the Gautama Buddha. The original temple was built by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, and the current brick structure dates back to the 5th–6th century CE. It features a spectacular 180-feet pyramidal central spire (shikhara) adorned with intricate carvings. Directly behind the temple lies the sacred Bodhi Tree and the ancient 'Vajrasana' (Diamond Throne), which marks the exact sandstone seat where the Buddha sat in deep meditation facing east.
