What is Indigo?

A plant used for blue dye

Long ago in Champaran, Bihar, poor farmers were forced by British rulers to grow Indigo on their best land instead of food crops. Indigo is a plant used to make blue dye, but growing it ruined the soil. The farmers were suffering, so Mahatma Gandhi came to Champaran in 1917 to help them. This was his very first Satyagraha (peaceful protest) in India! Together, the people stood strong, protested peacefully, and won their rights back. This powerful movement became a huge stepping stone towards India's independence.
