The Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya is one of the most respected trees in human history. It is a sacred Peepal tree (Ficus religiosa) standing next to the grand Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Under the branches of this very tree, Prince Siddhartha sat in deep meditation for days. On a full moon night in 528 BCE, he attained ultimate spiritual enlightenment and became the Gautama Buddha (the Enlightened One). From this spot, his teachings of peace, kindness, honesty, truth, and love spread to billions of people across the globe.
