The Barabar Caves are the oldest surviving rock-cut caves in India, located in the Jehanabad district of Bihar. Carved in the 3rd Century BCE during the Mauryan Empire, they were commissioned by the great Emperor Ashoka for the Ajivika sect of ascetics. The caves are cut out of solid granite rock with extreme architectural precision. The inside of the caves features a legendary 'Mauryan Polish'—rendering the granite walls so smooth they look and feel like glass mirrors! Because of this perfect smoothness, any shout inside the cave bounces back as a clear, lingering, and beautiful echo.
